Summer at Patina

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name’s Rod Shields, and I’ve recently taken over Patina Wines from Gerald Naef. Over the past few months, I’ve been lucky enough to meet a few of you, and I’m really looking forward to getting to know more of you as time goes on.

A little about me, my background is in business, but wine has always been the real passion. After working the 2024 vintage in Mudgee and studying winemaking through Charles Sturt University (a long-time goal nearly complete), I’ve decided to swap the boardroom for the vineyard and focus fully on growing the Patina story.

I’m incredibly grateful to Gerald for his generosity and support during this handover, and I’m thrilled that the talented team – including Nadja Wallington, who will continue as winemaker – is staying on. Gerald will also remain involved as a consultant for the next couple of vintages, helping ensure the wines continue in the true Patina style.

For now, you can still find the full range of Patina wines on our website or taste them at the Ferment cellar door in Orange. If there’s something specific you’re chasing (even if it’s not listed), just send me an email. Gerald’s extensive cellar holds plenty of treasures from the last 26 years, and I plan to make these available to members over time.

Some exciting news to share: Patina Wines has just been awarded five red stars by the Halliday Wine Companion, a wonderful recognition of the consistent quality that Gerald and the team have built. My aim is to continue that tradition, keeping Patina’s style front and centre, while adding a couple of new varietals down the track, including a Syrah for vintage 2026.

Chardonnay remains the heart of Patina, joined by Riesling (both dry and our “Scandalous” off-dry), Rosé, Pinot Noir, and the Cab Merlot blend. We’re also on the lookout for a new home for Patina in Orange (whilst the grapes will still be grown and supplied by Gerald from his vineyard), and I’m hoping to have a new cellar door open before the 2026 releases.

Thanks for being part of the Patina journey. I can’t wait to share the next chapter with you.

Cheers,
Rod
