2018 Patina ‘Jezza’
$65.00
95 Points, Halliday Wine Companion // Pristine fruit up front leads gracefully to mouth filling tannin and inviting acid mid palate merging with spice and pepper whilst gradually tapering to a lingering very fine tannin finish.
95 Points “Gerald Naef’s signature merlot/cabernet franc/cabernet sauvignon/petit verdot blend is only produced in supreme vintages. Mulberries, Davidson plum, blackcurrant and lingonberries. This wine feels otherworldly in its extreme depth of savoury umami and filagree of texture. Volatility blows off with a stiff decant and the wine opens up with black bean, porcini, li hing mui (Chinese dried plums) and autumn leaves. Powdered coriander and cumin linger. A unique tasting experience that needs its own class.” 2024 Halliday Wine Companion, Shanteh Wale
93 Points “A Merlot/Cabernet Franc/Cabernet Sauvignon/Petit Verdot blend, be consumed by dark plums, blackberries and blackcurrants with a silky melted chocolate ripple gliding through the middle. A little earthiness and dried herbs rise up late with a persistent finish leaving plenty to consider. Nicely done.” QWine Reviews, Oct 2023
What’s in a Name?: Jezza is what my nephews dubbed me when they were at Boarding School in Orange. They spent many weekends with us and this period is filled with good memories so I thought it appropriate to call my Signature red blend Jezza.
Winemakers Notes: The stars don’t often align but when they do the season produces brilliant Jezza quality grapes. I look for intensity in flavour, colour, freshness and good tannin structure… when they all come together it is very difficult to leave a bottle half full.
Cabernet Sauvignon gives this wine nuances of black currant flavours with good up front palate intensity and a lingering soft tannin finish. Merlot rounds out the mid palate and contributes rich berry flavours whilst the Cabernet Franc contributes a lightly lifted floral note, sweet spice and intensity to the mid palate. Petit Verdot brings lovely soft tannins.
Product Description
Winemaker: Gerald Naef
Colour: Dark ruby red in colour.
Aroma: Ripe plum, blackberry, mulberry, cherry, raspberry spice and a hint of tobacco leaf integrate well with toasty oak.
Palate: Pristine fruit up front leads gracefully to mouth filling tannin and inviting acid mid palate merging with spice and pepper whilst gradually tapering to a lingering very fine tannin finish.
Winemaking: The grapes were crushed and then cold soaked to extract dark berry flavours before being fermented in vat. It was pressed off skins during late ferment and aged in new and seasoned French oak barrels.
Cellaring: This wine has intensity of fruit and tannin along with freshness that will enable it to age very well. It is drinking well now but if you can put it away for a few years it will develop enticing secondary characters and the tannins should become silky and simply irresistible. It has very good structure which should enable it to continue to improve for ten to. Twenty years.
