2016 Patina Jezza Cabernet Merlot

96 Points, The Real Review
The stars don’t often align but when they do the season produces brilliant Jezza quality grapes. I look for intensity in flavour, colour, freshness and good tannin structure.

96 Points “This is one of the more compelling red wines i have enjoyed from Orange and is worthy of its flagship status. The wine is a Bordeaux style blend with 75% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Petit Verdot. A youthful red hue in the glass the nose has spice and sweeter cedar tones from new oak that are beautifully contrasted by piercing blackberry and mulberry fruits alongside earth and graphite. Blackberry drives the palate with milk chocolate interlaced with tobacco and leather, tannins are compact and drying with taut acidity that is in harmony with the wines other components. The integration of new oak shows through on the finish with vanillin tones to dark berry fruits.” The Winereviewer

96 Points “Bright purple colour with brighter red edges. Licorice, clove and toasty, cedary oak – dried blackberries – aromatics are brooding. Time liberated softens its stance. A vibrant palate, loads of moving parts – red and blue berries, ripe and retaining freshness, while carrying a savoury, meaty complexity. Tannins are integrated, no mean feat with the blend, acidity still crunchy. A sensational glass of wine” Nick Butler, The Real Review

93 Points “There is a lovely composure and balance to this wine with supple blackcurrant and blueberry fruits which travel the length of the palate. There are also hints of crushed leaf and spice. The oak is beautifully well-integrated, and the tannins are ripe and papery. A wine of excellent balance and harmony. Built for cellaring.” Toni Paterson MW, The Real Review

95 Points “Deep, dark red colour with a faint trace of purple in the rim. Smoky, creosote, char-oak aromas are savoury rather than fruity and very appealing. The wine is full-bodied, rich and soft in the mouth, showing good concentration, charm, a fruit-sweet centre and detailed flavour. Red fruits predominate. Some tobacco, but there is no green leafiness per se. Delicious concentration, sumptuous multi-faceted flavour and oodles of charm.” Huon Hooke, The Real Review

95 Points “Is this the best wine I’ve had from the Orange district? You betcha! It’s the type of wine you peruse slowly yet the bottle is drained in no time. I could not resist going back again and again. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a drop of Petit Verdot (75/17/7/1). Attractive scents of violets, coffee, cedar, dark chocolate and handfuls of roasted capsicum all lurch forward for your attention. There’s a bristling energy about this blend with hazelnuts, blueberry pie and earthy tones creeping into the frame. Loaded with fruit, time in the glass sees a savoury side of leather and cigar box ride stepping up. Oak is well managed with a silky smooth delivery through the mouth. Licks of spice add further interest on a long and moreish finish. A really impressive wine! Drink now to 10 years+” QWine

94 Points “Merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. It’s a solid, well structured red with beef stock, blackcurrant, briary herb and fresh spearmint characters laid on. It’s a polished wine but it feels sturdy. Choc-orange characters play a modest but positive role. If well stored it will carry the next 10 years with ease.” Campbell Mattinson, Winecompanion

“It’s an amazing colour, just so dense and beautiful in the glass. The nose is similarly captivating. It smells rich and juicy, dark berries as the main player with blueberries, dark chocolate and just a hint of herbs. This sounds so good I know but the palate is simply incredible.” Words from a Wineglass, Tony Peters

“The Patina version of the Bordeaux icon wine is just about the best wine I’ve tasted from the Orange region – and I’m a big fan or their sauvignon blanc and chardonnay, so that’s saying something!” Travis Schulz

Jezza is what my nephews dubbed me when they were at Boarding School in Orange. They spent most of their weekends with us and this period is filled with good memories so I thought it appropriate to call my Signature red wine Jezza.

The stars don’t often align but when they do the season produces brilliant Jezza quality grapes. I look for intensity in flavour, colour, freshness and good tannin structure… and when they all come together it is very difficult to leave a bottle half full. Cabernet Sauvignon gives this wine nuances of black currant flavours with good up front palate intensity and a lingering soft tannin finish. Merlot rounds out the mid palate and contributes rich berry flavours while the Cabernet Franc contributes a lightly lifted floral note, sweet spice and intensity to the mid palate.

This Bordeaux style blend is 75% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Petit Verdot. The grapes were crushed then cold soaked to extract dark berry flavours before being fermented in vat. It was pressed off skins during late ferment and aged in new and old French oak along with one new American barrel – just to add a little interest.

Product Description

Colour: Dark ruby red in colour.

Aroma: Ripe plum, blackberry dark cherry, chocolate and lightly floral with well integrated toasted oak.

Palate: The palate is mouth filling yet elegant with up front ripe berry, dark cherry, plum and a hint of spice. It is a well structured wine that begins with fresh ripe fruit followed by subtle integrated oak, soft tannins, and a long back palate.

Cellaring: This wine has intensity of fruit and tannin along with freshness that will inable it to age very well. It is drinking well now but if you can put it away for three to five years it will develop enticing secondary characters and the tannins should become silky and simply irresistible.
