2004 Patina Reserve Chardonnay

95 Points, The Real Review.
Orange consistently produces world class chardonnay; It is a very versatile variety that expresses beautifully as a lightly wooded style or as a barrel fermented and lees aged wine which shows rich flavours and velvety mouth feel.

95 Points “Medium yellow colour, bright and fresh looking. The bouquet confirms that it is very much fresh and alive, with delicious grapefruity and lemony flavour and bracing but balanced acidity. Creamy yeast-lees derived notes on the nose too. A ripping wine that shows how really good chardonnay can develop with time in bottle.” Huon Hooke, The Real Review, Mar 2020

95 Points “Fermented and matured on lees for 12 months in new and used French oak. There is so much texture to the palate it might be seen as sweet, but it’s not. What it does have is a classic mix of grapefruit, white peach and apple.” James Halliday, Wine Companion, Aug 2020

92 Points “Astonishing to see 15 year-old chardonnay that looks so youthful and fresh. Pears and pastry more than classic lemon or lime fruit. Minerals and an underlying smokiness add complexity. The palate shows roasted nuts and marzipan more than fruit.” Nick Butler, The Real Review, Nov 2019

This wine is a bit of a treat… It started life quite angular and sharp so I decided to put it away for a few years to see how it rounded out with time. After fifteen years I am now very happy to share it with you. This is only the second chardonnay vintage from the Patina vineyard… I don’t even think the winemaker had any grey hair back then. :-/

Barrel fermented and matured on lees for twelve months in a combination of new and one year old French oak. Alc/Vol 12.3%

Product Description

Colour: Pale straw yellow.

Aroma: This one has it all… apple, peach, rockmelon, nuttiness, apricot, tropical fruit and it all appears more obvious in this aged Chardonnay.

Palate: The up front palate is mouth filling with just a hint of butterscotch progressing to a mouth filling mid palate and a long finish with a suggestion of apple.

Winemaking: Barrel fermented and matured on lees for twelve months in a combination of new and one year old French oak.

Cellaring: I love Chardonnay and this wine is drinking very well now but definitely has some life left. How long? I’m not sure. It is very well balanced with good acidity so it could improve for many years.
